Bore, Hosel, and the Quarter Millimetre Between Them
A ferrule has to fit two things at once, and the two things are specified by different people who have never spoken to each other.
The drawer behind the assembly bench holds about forty ferrule sizes. Visitors find that funny until I explain what they are for, and then they usually ask why anyone would sell a bag of assorted ferrules labelled "iron" as though that were a specification.
The reason for forty is simple arithmetic. A ferrule has an inside diameter that must slide onto a shaft tip and an outside diameter that must match a hosel. Shaft tips come in several standards. Hosels vary by manufacturer, by model year, and sometimes between the long and short irons of the same set. The product of those two lists is not a small number.
The Inside Number Comes From the Shaft
Iron shafts arrive as either taper tip or parallel tip. A taper tip finishes at 0.355 inches and is designed to be cut only at the butt, because the tip section is already sized for its intended club. A parallel tip finishes at 0.370 inches and is designed to be tip trimmed by the builder according to a chart.
That fifteen thousandths of an inch is the difference between a ferrule that slides on with light thumb pressure and one that will not go on at all, or one that rattles. Wood and hybrid shafts add 0.335 and 0.350 to the list. Put a 0.370 ferrule on a 0.355 tip and you have a gap that the epoxy will have to fill, and epoxy is not a structural gap filler at that thickness.
The Outside Number Comes From the Head
The outer diameter is the harder half, because there is no standard at all. A blade iron hosel might measure 0.480 inches at its top edge. A cast game-improvement iron from the same season might measure 0.530. A hybrid hosel is different again, and adapter sleeves for adjustable drivers have their own shoulder dimension entirely.
The ferrule has to arrive slightly larger than whatever that number is, because the finishing step is turning it down to match. A ferrule that arrives undersize cannot be fixed. It leaves a lip in the wrong direction, with the hosel proud of the plastic, and there is nothing to be done except take it off and start again with the right part.

What a Generous Fit Actually Costs You
The temptation, when the exact size is not on hand, is to grab the next size up and let the epoxy take up the slack. It goes together. It looks acceptable once it is turned. Three things follow from it, and all three arrive later.
The ferrule can migrate. With clearance around the shaft, the only thing holding it at the hosel is the epoxy fillet, and heat cycling in a car boot through a Texas July will work it loose. That is the creeping ferrule people bring in and assume is cosmetic.
The seal is compromised. A gap that epoxy had to bridge in a thick layer will develop a crack line eventually, and once there is a path, water gets to the top of the joint.
The stress transition stops working. The whole point of the taper is to hand the load gradually from a clamped section to a free one. A ferrule that is not actually in contact with the shaft is not participating in that at all. It is decoration at that point, which is exactly what everyone already believes it to be.
The right ferrule slides on with steady thumb pressure and stops. If it drops on under its own weight, it is the wrong part, and no amount of epoxy makes it the right one.
How We Handle It Here
Every tip gets measured with calipers before a ferrule is selected, including on shafts whose specification we already know, because pull-outs from other people's builds have frequently been tipped, sanded or abraded past their nominal size. The measurement takes fifteen seconds and it has saved us from the wrong part more times than I would like to admit.
The bore we used goes on the component docket alongside the tip trim and the playing length. It is a small line and most clients never look at it. The one time it matters is when a club needs work five years from now in a different city, and the shop doing that work can order the right part before the club is even taken apart.
