The Putter Is a Measurement Problem Dressed Up as a Preference
Golfers replace putters on feel and keep replacing them for years. Almost nobody checks the two dimensions that decide where the ball starts.
Length Sets Your Eyes, Lie Sets the Face
Retail putters are almost all built at thirty-four inches, and thirty-four inches is not a measurement of anything except manufacturing convenience. A club that is an inch too long pushes your eyes inside the target line and pulls your hands away from your body, and both of those changes show up as a start-line error before the stroke has even begun.
We set you over a ball on the mat with a laser on the shaft and a mirror under the head. Eye position gets recorded, hand position gets recorded, and then we shorten and lengthen a test putter in half-inch steps until the ball is directly under the eye line and the sole sits flat. Most golfers who arrive with a thirty-four leave with something between thirty-two and a half and thirty-three and a half.
Lie angle follows immediately, because it is the variable that decides where the face is pointing at address. A putter sitting toe-up closes the face relative to your line without you doing anything wrong. Two degrees of lie error is worth more start-line deviation than most golfers' actual stroke flaw.
Head Mass Against the Greens You Actually Putt On
Head weight is a distance-control tool, and the right amount of it depends entirely on how fast the surfaces run where you play.
Slower greens ask you to make a bigger stroke, and a heavier head lets you make that stroke without a stab at the ball. Fast greens punish extra mass because the golfer starts decelerating to keep the ball from running out. Municipal Bermuda greens in August and a private bent surface in April are two different putting environments, and if you split your golf between them we will fit for the one you play most and tell you honestly what the other will feel like.
Weight is adjusted with sole ports where the head takes them and with tip weighting inside the shaft where it does not. Either way, both the amount and the location are written down, because a putter that mysteriously changes feel after a regrip is almost always a putter whose mass ledger nobody kept.

These are ranges we see, not prescriptions. Two golfers on the same greens have landed thirty grams apart and both were right.
The Grip Is Fitted to the Stroke You Have
Grip shape on a putter changes how much the hands can rotate, and that is a real mechanical effect rather than a comfort question. A large flat-topped grip quiets the hands and suits a golfer whose face angle wanders. A slim pistol leaves the hands free and suits a golfer who releases the head deliberately and putts by feel.
Grip mass matters too, and it is the variable that ruins more putter fittings than any other. Swapping a sixty gram grip for a one hundred and thirty gram grip pulls the balance point up the shaft and takes several swing weight points out of the head. The putter you loved becomes the putter you cannot lag with, and nobody connects the two events because they happened three weeks apart.

We Do Not Fit You a New Stroke
A putter fitting can make your existing stroke start the ball where you are aiming. It cannot make you a better reader of greens, and it cannot fix a stroke problem that needs a coach rather than a gauge. When we think you are looking at the second thing, we say so and we do not sell you a putter to cover it.
Roughly one putter session in six ends with us shortening the club you brought, changing the grip, and charging you for the bench time. Nobody has complained about that outcome yet.
