The Six Numbers That Actually Describe a Shaft

A flex letter is a marketing convenience, not a specification. Here is what we look at instead, in the order it usually matters, written from the perspective of the bench rather than the catalogue.

One

Weight, Before Anything Else

Shaft mass is the single largest lever in the whole conversation and the one most often decided last. A forty gram driver shaft and an eighty gram driver shaft ask completely different things of your sequencing, and no amount of clever bend profile will paper over the wrong mass.

We start here because weight also drives swing weight, total mass and the feel of the club through the transition. Get it wrong and every subsequent decision is compensation.

Two

Frequency, Which Is Flex With a Number Attached

Clamp a shaft at the butt, hang a known mass on the tip, pluck it, and count the oscillations per minute. That figure is the honest version of the letter printed on the shaft. Two shafts both stamped stiff can be eight or ten cycles apart, which is most of a flex.

Frequency is also how we check that a set is a set. Running the numbers across eight irons should produce a straight line with a consistent step. When it produces a staircase with a landing in the middle, somebody trimmed one of those clubs wrong.

What a slope looks like: a healthy iron set steps roughly four to five cycles per club from the long end to the short end. A jump of twelve between two adjacent irons is a build error, not a design feature.

Three

Where the Shaft Bends, Not Just How Much

Two shafts can measure the same frequency and behave completely differently because the stiffness is distributed differently along the length. A shaft that is soft in the middle and firm at the tip launches differently from one that is firm through the middle and softer at the tip, even with identical butt frequency.

Catalogues describe this as low, mid or high launch. On the bench we look at it as three separate zones and measure each, because the marketing label collapses three numbers into one adjective and loses most of the information doing it.


Four

Torque, and Why Lower Is Not Automatically Better

Torque is resistance to twisting along the long axis, quoted in degrees. Low torque became a selling point years ago and the assumption stuck that less is always better. It is not. A very low torque shaft in the hands of a smooth-tempo golfer often feels boardy and dead, and the feedback loss is real even when the dispersion numbers barely move.

Torque also interacts with weight. A light shaft with very low torque is expensive to make and frequently harsh. A heavier shaft can carry more torque comfortably. We fit it as a feel variable with a dispersion check, not as a number to minimise.


Five

Trimming, Where Most Damage Happens

Almost every shaft ships longer than it needs to be and must be cut. Where you cut changes what you end up with. Removing material from the tip stiffens the tip section substantially. Removing it from the butt softens the overall feel and reduces frequency. Manufacturers publish trim charts assuming a particular playing length, and a shop that ignores the chart or applies the wrong one produces a club that measures nothing like its own label.

This is why the docket records raw length and tip trim separately. Playing length alone does not tell you how a shaft got there, and two clubs at the same finished length can be a full flex apart.

Ask any shop for the tip trim on your last build. If nobody can tell you, nobody wrote it down, and the club cannot be reproduced.

Six

Spine and Consistency

A shaft is a tube built from wrapped material, and the wrap seam leaves it slightly stiffer in one orientation than another. Whether that matters is one of the more argued questions in club building. Our position is measured rather than ideological: on premium shafts the variation is usually small enough to ignore, and on inexpensive shafts it occasionally is not. We check, we record the orientation used, and we move on.
